Medical researchers at the Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) and the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) have been in close cooperation to conquer brain tumors and recently met in Seoul.
The two institutions had an in-depth discussion on how to cooperate in research and created a stepping stone to obtain breakthrough findings on brain disease.

Brain tumor refers to tumors developed inside the skull. It is largely classified into primary brain tumor that primarily occurs in the brain and metastatic brain tumor that primarily occurs in other parts of the body and spread to the brain.

SNUH and MGH are holding video conferences more than twice a year since 2013 to share treatment cases and research results. Especially from the 4th conference in 2014, they strengthened cooperation and identified the characteristics of genomic mutation of metastatic brain tumor, which is the first discovery in the world.

They also had a meeting and lecture at SNUH between the 26th and the 28th as part of cooperative efforts.

During this meeting, Dr. Batchelor, Director of the Brain Tumor Center of MGH, shared his knowledge and experience in genomic mutation of gilosarcoma (malignant brain tumor) with medical professionals at the Brain Tumor Center of SNUH and Dr. Charles Lee (director of the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine).

Dr. Batchelor and medical professionals at the Brain Tumor Center of SNUH formed a consensus on the importance of basic research on incurable brain tumor and promised to further strengthen cooperation in relevant research.

Dr. Batchelor also gave a lecture on the 'treatment of malignant brain tumor using angiogenesis inhibitor' and the 'targeted treatment of brain tumor.'

The MGH is a hospital that outperformed Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital ranking at the top position in the Best Hospitals of US News & World Report (2015-2016). MGH training and consulting cost thousands of dollars and many medical professionals around the world seek to get training in the MGH.

Cooperation with such a prestigious medical institution on equal terms represents that the SNUH has world-class capabilities in brain tumor treatment and research.

Professor Sun Ha Paek of the Department of Neurosurgery, Director of the Brain Tumor Center of SNUH said, "This meeting helps accelerate research cooperation with the MGH." "We will give shape to a plan about matters discussed at the 7th video conference on March 29."
