Coffee is good for bone health of menopausal women.
- A cup of coffee a day lowers the risk of osteoporosis by 36%.
- A research team led by Professor Park Sang-min at SNUH studied 4,066 menopausal women.

It was reported that a cup of coffee is good for bone health of menopausal women.

A research team led by Professor Park Sang-min at the Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) discovered the correlation between coffee and osteoporosis in 4,066 menopausal women who received a bone density test based on the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare between 2008 and 2011.

The research team found that less than a cup of coffee a day reduces the risk of osteoporosis by 21%, a daily cup of coffee by 33% and two cups of coffee per day by 36%. In other words, a moderate amount of coffee increases bone density.

Previous studies have shown that the caffeine contained in coffee hinders calcium absorption, causing osteoporosis. However, the risk of osteoporosis increases when over 330 mg of caffeine is consumed per day, roughly equal to 600 ml per day.

The research team presumed that estrogen, clogensan (antioxidant effect), and diterpene (anti-inflammatory effect) present in coffee have a beneficial effect on bone health.

Professor Park Sang-min said, "Koreans consume an average of 0.7 cup of coffee a day, so it is not major concern at present." "Less than three cups of coffee a day may rather prevent fracture and help improve bone health."
