SNU Hospital Receives Accreditation of the AAHRPP Credited as an International Accrediting Agency for Clinical Research.

The SNU Hospital gets awarded accreditation from the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Program (AAHRPP), which accredits research entities with high-quality human research protection programs in the U.S. and at internationally.

In 2001, the AAHRPP was found as an independent, non-profit accrediting body, sponsored by seven member organizations with tie to safety and ethics of clinical research, thereby offering ethical standards for protection of rights and welfare of human subjects to clinical research institutions and awarding accreditations to those institutions in line with such standards. The AAHRPP has so far accredited over 200 entities worldwide.

Newly accredited organizations demonstrate their commitment to conducting researches according to the AAHRPP's rigorous standards for protection of research participants. Marjorie Speers, CEO of the AAHRPP,
said in the issuance of accreditations, “From the beginning, AAHRPP’s goal has been to protect as many participants as possible, while ensuring that the world reaps the benefits of research. These accreditations, of key players in Asia and the U.S., represent another significant step forward in achieving that goal.”

"At a time when the world focused solely on benefits of clinical research, the AAHRPP set a goal to strengthen human research protection from the outset. Newly accredited bodies in the U.S. and Asia make another leap toward such goal,” said Marjorie Speers.

In addition to the SNU Hospital, recent accreditations include four overseas institutions: the National Cancer Institute under the National Institute of Health, UCLA Medical Center, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, and National Taiwan University Hospital, the first accreditation in Taiwan.

The AAHRPP seal has greater significance for the SNU Hospital as a by-product of concerted efforts among the SNU College of Medicine, SNU Hospital, SNU Bundang Hospital, SNU Boramae Medical Center, and SNU Healthcare System Gangnam Center. After initiating actions for the AAHRPP accreditation in October 2010, they collaborated on creation of a center for human research protection, formulation of standard operational guidelines for human research protection, and ongoing training of researchers. They finally earned the AAHRPP accreditation after going through the first document review and the AAHRPP fact-finding group's 5-day on-site assessment in September 2012.

“The AAHRPP accreditation illustrates the SNU Hospital's presence as a world-class clinical research institution, and it is expected to exert enormous influences over extensive advances in medical research, including multinational clinical trial, through better protection of human research subjects, international recognition of clinical research competence and status, and improvement in research ethics and quality,” told Hee-won JUNG, President & CEO, SNU Hospital.
