2012 Internatioal Oncoplastic Thyroid Surgery Symposium


 On January 14th, 2012, Seoul National University College of Medicine held the 2012 International Oncoplastic Thyroid Surgery Symposium from 8am to 5pm on the first floor of the Clinical Research Institute Auditorium at Seoul National University Hospital to celebrate the 1000th Bilateral Axillo-Breast Approach (BABA) Endoscopic and Robotic Thyroid Surgery.

 For the first time in Korea, the three-dimensional Robotic Thyroid Surgery operation was broadcasted live with high definition during this international symposium. Moreover, the surgeons from overseas was presented as chairs including (Dr. Nancy Perrier/ US, Dr. E. Kebebew/ US, Dr. Shimizu/ Japan, Dr. Ping Wang/ China, Dr. C.Y. Lo/ HK) who have achieved worldwide recognition in thyroid field.

Bilateral Axillo-Breast Approach (BABA) Endoscopic and Robotic Thyroid Surgery was developed on February 2008 by endocrine surgery team (Prof. Yeo-Kyu Youn, Prof. Kyu Eun Lee and etc) of Seoul National University Hospital. Bilateral Axillo-Breast Approach (BABA) Endoscopic and Robotic Thyroid Surgery minimizes scars and synechia(유착) on the neck and it provides the same approach and field of vision as the traditional thyroidotomy so that it is easy to learn and safe. Also, there is an advantage that it is possible to perform a thyroidotomy while maintaining the same visual filed bilateral thyroid.

The three-dimensional live operation has an advantage over two-dimensional images in checking and preserving significant structure such as recurrent laryngeal nerve, parathyroid in much smaller spaces. This was expected to be the first domestic symposium which allows participants to discuss with one another as they simultaneously watch the live three-dimensional operation that is exactly the same as what an operator is looking at.

Prof. Yeo-Kyu Youn, who is the supervisor of international symposium this year, mentioned a live operation that will be broadcasted in three-dimension serves a purpose of sharing the latest technique through a real demonstration by the specialist in the field.
