Real-time Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) Operation Via Satellite at the International Seminar in Japan

At the "Complex Catheter Therapeutics 2008," the international seminar on coronary intervention was held at Kobe Portopia Hotel from January 31 to February 2 in 2008. The coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) operation conducted at an operation theatre in Seoul National University was presented at a real-time live tele-conference via satellite.
On February 2, the "CABG without using an artificial heart-lung machine (OPCAB)" was conducted at an operation theatre in Seoul National University for two hours from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. It was broadcast to a seminar conference room in Kobe, Japan real-time, and deep and wide discussions were made on about CABG among participants and the presiding team at the seminar room.
Professor Ki-Bong Kim's team presented the "OPCAB using exclusively arterial grafts on the beating heart" which is most advanced in the field of coronary bypass operation. During the operation, numerous questions and heated debates unraveled.
This was the first time to present a heart operation performed in a domestic hospital broadcast real-time via satellite at an international seminar, which served as a chance to boost the prestige of the domestic heart operation.
Professor Kim adopted coronary bypass operation without using artificial heart-lung machine for multi-vessel coronary diseases in 1998 for the first time in Korea. He has already presided over about 1,400 OPCAB operations, reducing the surgical mortalities to the range of one percent. He also published more than 30 academic articles in the international renowned journals.
