SEOUL NATIONAL UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

1. Could you briefly introduce yourself and your professional background?

My name is Abdalla Deb, and I am a Consultant Urologist in the United Kingdom. I began my independent consultant practice in 2022 and, in 2025, came to Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) to undertake advanced training in robotic kidney cancer surgery.

2.  How did you first learn about Seoul National University Hospital, and what motivated you to choose SNUH for your fellowship training?

I first became aware of Seoul National University Hospital through its outstanding international reputation and its leadership in minimally invasive and robotic urological surgery. I was particularly impressed by the expertise of the kidney cancer team and the high volume and complexity of cases managed at SNUH. I also developed strong professional ties with the institution through Professor Chang Wook Jeong, whose generous support and mentorship were instrumental in facilitating my transition to SNUH.

3.  What has been the most valuable experience during your fellowship at SNUH—and what are the key things you hope to take away from this training?

What I have taken away from this training is not only enhanced surgical expertise and a deeper understanding of complex robotic procedures, but also the culture of meticulous preparation, teamwork, and continuous improvement that I have witnessed at SNUH.

4.  In your view, what distinguishes SNUH from other institutions in terms of clinical training or patient care?

This is a difficult question to answer, as many excellent institutions provide outstanding training and patient care. However, what has stood out to me at SNUH is the combination of exceptionally high clinical standards, a remarkable volume and complexity of cases, and a culture that continuously strives for innovation and improvement.

5.  How would you describe the mentorship and academic atmosphere here?

Beyond the technical aspects of training, I have felt genuinely welcomed by my mentors and colleagues. Their encouragement, kindness, and willingness to invest in the development of international relationships have made my time here truly special.

6. What is the most important thing you have gained from your time at SNUH (e.g. knowledge, skills, perspective, network)? 

I would not be exaggerating if I said that I have gained all of these—knowledge, technical skills, a broader perspective, and a wonderful professional network. My time at SNUH has been truly transformative, both professionally and personally. Beyond learning advanced robotic surgery, I have gained invaluable insights from outstanding mentors and colleagues, many of whom I now consider lifelong friends and collaborators.

I cannot thank everyone at SNUH enough for their generosity and support.

7.  What has been the most memorable moment in Korea, either inside or outside the hospital?

A lot of them, but I did enjoy playing Table Tennis regularly in Sinchon Ping Pong Club a lot.

8.  What message would you like to share with future international fellows considering SNUH?

You will truly be living a dream when you join this world-class institution in Seoul. Make the most of every single moment and embrace every opportunity that comes your way. Don’t let concerns about language become a barrier—because the warmth, kindness, and genuine care you will experience at SNUH speak far more powerfully than words ever could.
